Recently I was invited to Moon Hall School to attend talks from a few tech companies with relatively new items on the market to support dyslexic pupils, as well those who need support with executive functioning.
Moon Hall is a specialist Dyslexia school in Reigate, Surrey. They have children attending who have a diagnosis of dyslexia and are in need of more specific teaching than a mainstream school can provide. They have children aged 7-16, some of whom go on to take their GCSEs.This is part three of our series exploring the companies I saw and what they can offer.
Scanmarker is the last item of tech that can be useful for dyslexics or those with visual impairment.
Scanmarker is a reading pen which can read and translate over 100 languages.
The pen is easy to use, you just run the reader over an area of text, you can scan paragraphs and have it read it all at once or in smaller amounts. This means pupils can use it alongside other learning and reading strategies to help them break down questions or texts.
The pen can define words that student is unsure of, can audio record notes and then translate to different languages. It can read maths and symbols.
The readings speed is adjustable and the dictaphone makes notes and reminders.
The Scanmarker has an exam pen, which can read as well; a potentially useful tool for a school to have to hand.
The pen is well priced at £210, and both the full version and the exam version are the same price.
