Choosing the Right School for your Child with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Choosing the right school for your child with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is a pivotal decision that can greatly influence their educational journey. Navigating this process might feel a bit daunting at first, but with a little guidance, you'll find a school that feels just right for your child.

1. Understand Your Child’s Needs

First and foremost, what are your child’s unique requirements? Every child with SEN is distinct, so take time to consider their strengths, challenges, and interests. Do they thrive in a smaller setting or need specific therapeutic services? Understanding these aspects will help you identify schools that can cater specifically to your child’s needs, and to ask questions of the schools you meet.

2. Research and Visit Schools

Don't just rely on brochures or websites; visiting schools can give you a real feel for the atmosphere. During visits, observe how teachers interact with students and ask about their experience and qualifications in handling SEN. Consider enlisting the help of an expert to do the research for you and guide you through your options.

3. Evaluate Support Services

A key aspect to consider is the range of support services available at the school. Does the school offer speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, or counselling services? Having these resources in-house can make a significant difference in your child's school experience, providing them with the additional help they need to thrive.  Are they open to a one-to-one to work with your child in the classroom?

Every school has its unique culture and ethos. Look for a school that fosters an inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. Do they have a dedicated Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), or is it a title given to another member of staff as a secondary duty? How prominent is SEN in their prospectus and the way they project their school ethos and community?

5. Focus on Communication

Good communication between the school and home is vital. A school that maintains an open and transparent dialogue with parents can make you feel more connected and assured about your child’s progress. Ask potential schools about their communication policies and how they involve parents in the educational process.

6. Trust Your Instincts

Finally, trust your instincts. As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else. If a school feels right, it probably is. Your intuition, combined with the information you’ve gathered, will guide you to the best choice.
