Exam stress11+ and Common Entrance Exam Anxiety-Buster

Course runs Week of 14th December 2015 at Abingdon House School.

Don’t let exam stress get to your child this Christmas holiday. Join Firefly Education for a practical group course for children set to take the 11+ or Common Entrance in January.

In the course

The term “test anxiety” refers to the emotional reactions that some students have to exams. The fear of exams is not an irrational fear — after all, how you perform on exams can shape the course of an academic career. However, an excessive fear of exams can interfere with your ability to be successful.

This workshop that takes place over one four sessions in a week and provides participants an understanding of anxiety (cognitive, emotional and physiological reactions), cognitive ways of dealing with anxious thoughts, relaxation techniques that they can use to aid themselves with their exam related anxieties as well as test taking tips.

The workshop aims to offer:

  • an introduction to what it is that we mean by anxiety and to how cognitions contribute to anxiety
  • an introduction to hypnotic relaxation techniques (that include breathing exercises and guided visualisation exercises)
  • an introduction to identifying cognitive styles related to the increase of stress
  • an introduction to the experience of relaxation techniques that offers an opportunity to engage with their world in a different and more positive way that can be used to boost confidence and self esteem
  • Specific test taking tips when anxiety hits
  • an opportunity for some discussion about what participants felt that they gained and learned from the exercises

The relaxation skills coupled with good exam preparation can be an extremely effective working tool. Commitment to the sessions is necessary. Participants will be encouraged to practice between the sessions the cognitive skills and relaxation techniques that they are learning.
